Internet Trends

Posted May 30, 2013

On my way into work this morning I was listening to C-Span's morning call in show.  This mornings topic was about where people get their news.  Gauging the state of the country on the 30 or so call ins is obviously unscientific and anecdotal at best.  Of course there were the usual suspects, Fox News, NPR, CNN, even Al Jazeera came up multiple times, and everybody except one person said they get their news on the internet. But, I was surprised to hear how few people said they still read newspapers.
Coincidentally, in my email this morning I was sent a link to a presentation by Mary Meeker about Internet trends. Mary Meeker, is an analyst for KPCB ( a venture capital firm from Menlo Park, CA) who recently presented her annual Internet Trends at the D11 conference.  Below are some of the key statistics from that presentation.
  • Advertisers money is out of sync with audience. There’s a huge gap between the amount of time people spend on mobile devices and the amount of advertising budgets directed at mobile. Mobile takes up 12% of our time, but gets only 3% of ad budgets. Print media is the opposite, getting 6% of our time but pulling in 23% of the ad dollars.
  • 8 out of 10 of the top internet sites are from the US but more than 80% of their audience is outside the US.
  • Google+ is doing better than you think. It’s now the #4 social media site, behind Facebook, YouTube and Twitter. And it’s closing in on Twitter.
  •  Mobile keeps booming. Mobile traffic represents 15% of all the internet traffic, versus less than 1 percent in May 2009. By this time next year mobile could approach 25% of  internet traffic.
  • More than 500 million photos are uploaded and shared on Flickr, Snapchat, Instagram, and Facebook each day.
We are living in the digital age, and you need to make sure your business has a sound and active digital presence and strategy.  The key word is "active", you can't simply put up a web page and walk away, you have to participate!

Framework Updates for May 21, 2013

Posted May 20, 2013

This is a quick list of tweaks that might affect or inspire you. Feel free to contact support@contensive.com or Dwayne@contensive.com with any questions or comments.

Search Engine Site Map

The search engine sitemap addon automatically and continuously submits pages on your site to search engines like Google. There is no setup, you just install it.

This week's changes add two new sets of links

  1. links to pages that are not on any menu and not displayed as child pages (excluding those marked as blocked)
  2. links to pages created within addons, like the detail page of every blog post.

Newsletter Addon Rewrite

The newsletter addon creates an online newsletter with issues, articles, article categories, archives, group-based article permissions and an automatic email.

This past month we have re-written a new newsletter addon (called "Newsletter 2" in the Addon Library). The primary change is to convert the html and stylesheets so they can be easily accommodate the horrendous limitations of email platforms. New sites will use it exclusively. Current sites will need to manually upgrade.

Ecommerce Online Checks

The ecommerce collection creates an account invoicing system on which all payment related addons will be based. It uses all major payment processors and includes online charges as well as automated recurring charges, invoicing, account statement and an online My Account page.

This week we added online echecks and primary/secondary payment preferences.

Membership Manager Reports

The membership manager collection creates a membership account system tracking multiple organizations and people per account. It uses the ecommerce collection to automate billing.

We added four reports with Pie and Bar Charts; Memberships By Type, Expirations by Month, Expirations by Membership Type, Renewals by Month.

Google Introduces All New "Google Maps"

Posted May 16, 2013

At the Google I/O conference today, Google introduced a bunch of new products and product roll-outs including Google Maps, a new music service, updates to Google + and a new look and features for one of the most popular Google products Google Maps.  Below is an excerpt from an article by Nathan Oliveras-Giles for the Verge (you can read full article here).

Google Maps on the desktop has been rebuilt from the ground up, ushering in its most significant changes since its launch eight years ago. After spending some time with the new Maps, and with its lead designer, we’re struck by Google’s choice to do away with most of the user interface elements and let the map reach from edge to edge in your browser. A lone search box in the upper left gives you access to Maps’ features, as does clicking on elements within the map. Google has integrated Google Now’s card metaphor to present information from a newly built-in version of Google Earth, reviews from Zagat and Google+, Street View, and directions. And new user interface tweaks surface locations and transit routes before you even search for them.

The rebooted Google Maps user interface, which made its public debut at Google I/O today, is a total reimagining of one of Google’s most popular services. The changes are a bit shocking at first — the new Maps looks and works more like a native app than a traditional website. The tiled desktop maps of old have been replaced with cleaner, quicker-loading vector maps. As you type into the search box, predictions show up as they did before, but once you've settled on what you’re looking for, details appear in the Google Now-style information cards.

Rather than solely relying on you searching for a location, the map automatically highlights your work, home, frequently searched-for locations and new places you might be interested in, based on your search history and places your friends have given good reviews. “Larry calls this going from a demand to an assist,” Jonah Jones, Maps’ lead designer, said of CEO Larry Page.
